Obituary

Barbara Jean Edwards peacefully entered eternal rest in her sleep at Pruitt Health Nursing Facility, Thursday July 23, 2026.

Barbara Jean was born on September 7, 1956, in Millen, Georgia, to the late Azalean Brewton and the late John Edwards. She was a happy, friendly, and active child whose bright spirit brought joy to those around her.

Unfortunately, unforeseen circumstances occurred as a toddler that left her with a lifelong disability, forever changing the course of her life. Barbara Jean was lovingly raised by her devoted maternal grandmother, Hattie Chafers. Under her grandmother's care, Barbara Jean grew into a sweet, loving, playful, and sensitive young girl. She was always delighted in greeting everyone who passed by her home on Palmer Row. Her warm smile and cheerful greetings in her own way became a familiar and cherished part of the neighborhood, leaving lasting memories with all who knew her.

Barbara Jean later became a resident of Gracewood State School and Hospital in Augusta, Georgia, where she received compassionate care for many years. When Gracewood closed, she moved to Pineview Personal Care Home, where she continued to thrive and was surrounded by caregivers who treated her with kindness, dignity, and love. Barbara Jean. better known to the Pineview staff as “Ma-Ma,” could often be seen carrying a doll or a purse—a gentle reflection of her nurturing spirit and childlike heart.

She remained at Pineview until earlier this year, when her declining health required a higher level of care. Barbara Jean spent the final months of her life under hospice care at Pruitt Health Nursing Facility, where she was cared for until the Lord called her home.

Although Barbara Jean faced many challenges throughout her life, she possessed a gentle heart and an affectionate spirit that touched everyone she encountered. Her innocence, genuine love for people, and joyful personality served as a reminder that life's greatest gifts are often found in the simplest acts of kindness and love.

Barbara Jean was preceded in death by her parents, younger brother, Jonas Brewton, her grandmother Hattie Chafers and three aunts, Minnie Lee Reddick, Earnestine Pinkney and Victoria Kimothro; one uncle, Eugene Reddick and other close relatives.
