Obituary

Petty Officer 1st Class Charles Haggins, USN Retired

1954-2021

I am free to fly on wind, to catch the breeze, floating where I please. I am free to shine with the sun, to light up the day in my own special way. I am free without my body, to live on in your heart and your memory.

Michelle Meleen

On Sunday morning, on the day of our Lord, August 8, 2021, OS1 Charles Haggins (USN Retired) suddenly, yet peacefully, departed this earthly life aged 67 years.

Petty Officer Haggins' (Operations Specialist First Class Retired) dedication to honor, duty, personal sacrifice, and outstanding professionalism earned him numerous navy achievement medals, letters of commendation, and memoranda of appreciation delivered with pleasure for meritorious service to the United States Navy during his 20-year military career. His fleet commands included the USS Biddle and the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower. His dedication and performance of duties reflected greatly upon himself, his specialization, and the United States Armed Forces. The Department of the Navy bestowed upon Petty Officer Haggins multiple Good Conduct Awards in recognition for faithful, zealous, and obedient naval service. He received a certificate of recognition for volunteer work given to the Virginia Beach Public School system and was recognized for exemplary volunteer service to promote youth education, physical fitness, and citizenship as a part of the U. S. Navy Community Service Personal Excellence Partnership program.

Charles Haggins was married to Debra Lynn Haggins, a twenty-year union which produced an enduring living legacy of three wonderful sons: Master Sergeant (USAF) Charles O'Brian Haggins (Neketa) of Washington D.C., Mr. Steven Marques Haggins (Marietta, GA), and Petty Officer 2nd Class (USN) Bradley Alexander Haggins (Virginia Beach, VA); six grandchildren: Isaiah, Kyle, Kayla, Jaden, Bria, and Langston Haggins. He leaves to mourn his three sisters, Ruth Roberson, Joann Haggins, and Joyce (Larry) Gibbons; two brothers, Walter Mitchell and Ronnie (Tanisha) Haggins, all of Millen, GA, and a host of loving nieces and nephews.
